  Straw is one of the most ancient materials. People succumbed to its magic a long time ago. They have been cultivating straw and working with it for centuries. The beauty of the ripe grain enchants people. The splendor of the golden stem fascinates them. Straw became a passion for generations of artists. This passion has been carried through to the present.

In the past decades straw weaving and appliquй has become an identity card for Belorussian art. The craft experienced swift growth in the second half of the 20th century. This growth allowed the craft to rise from ancient forms and techniques to the heights of professional art.
Works of modern Belorussian artists grace exhibitions in many museums in Belarus and other countries. These works deserve a museum of their own. This museum would preserve, collect, and present in full the trends, which have evolved in these crafts over the centuries. These trends have been both inherited from the past and developed by modern artists who have been restlessly searching for new techniques and expressions.

You are being introduced to an on-line museum of the Belorussian art of straw weaving and appliquй. Works of approximately three generations of leading Belorussian artists, from the 1960s and 1970s of the 20th century up to the present, have been collected in its galleries. You are going to learn about common trends in the development of straw weaving and appliquй as well as meet artists and their. students.

II International Festival of Straw Art

 

On JULY, 5 opening an exhibition of works of the Byelorussian masters " the FAIRY TALE of STRAW " at 17.00 will take place. The exhibition opens within the framework of II International seminar of straw art (the address: Minsk, street. Gikalo 4, Art gallery)

The exhibition is devoted to the foundress of modern Byelorussian art of art straw Vera Gavriliuk (1904 - 1985)

The exhibition will be open till October, 11

In an exposition of an exhibition new works of the Byelorussian artists of straw: Larisa Los, Lidya Glovatskaya, Lubov Selivinchik, Vera Soldatova, Anna Ivanova. Ludmila Valeeva, Inna Janchenko (Shayh) and others.

The exhibition incorporates 200 new works executed in technics of application by straw and weaving.

On international conference in Grodno " Civil and professional assemblages Belarus: the Internet for the successful future " the presentation of a site " the Belarussian straw " is conducted. On conference the demonstration of a collection of a dress decorated by straw was held. The writers of a collection studio "Spadchina" of a House children's creativity city Volkovissk. 12.09.02. The presentation of a virtual museum " Byelorussian starw " in gallery " Slavutya maistry" has passed.

14.08.02 In the Internet - class National libraries RB the occurring of the Byelorussian foremans and artists straw weaving and applique with the director of the American museum of straw art Morgyn Owens-Celli, director of the Hungarian museum of straw art Yunde Tuskes and president of the straw Guild in Britain Hazel Cothill was held. The occurring was organized by the writer of a virtual museum " Byelorussian straw " Tatiana Repina both Program of Training and Access to the Internet (IATP) in Belarus, the help in organization of an occurring was rendered by the members of public affiliation Cooperation of the business and creative women. During an occurring the protrusions of foreign guests have sounded, the sites of the American museum of straw art, straw Guild in Britain , virtual museum " Byelorussian straw " were rotined. The foremans - classes of the Byelorussian and foreign foremans have passed.

10.04.02. The report on creation of a museum " Byelorussian straw " on international conference " Museums and cultural heritage as part of the global information space " was made, which one drove from April 8 - 11, 2002 in Polotsk.
